Our tennis clinics for kids on the autism spectrum were inspired in part by the story of professional tennis player Jenson Brooksby, who bravely opened up about his autism diagnosis and the role it played in his journey—on and off the court.
Brooksby’s case highlighted how autism can affect executive functioning, communication, and social interactions, even in high-level athletes. His story resonated deeply with us. It reminded us that the tennis world—not just at the pro level, but at every level—must do more to understand and support neurodiverse players.
When Brooksby’s suspension was reconsidered after new insights into how autism impacted his ability to manage logistics and communication, it underscored the importance of awareness, understanding, and compassion—not just in tennis, but in life. His early experiences in therapy, including support with basic life skills, served as a reminder of the long-term impact early intervention and supportive environments can have.
